YBA Badminton Etiquette for all YBA Groups
Please respect the following etiquette when participating in one of our groups.
- Be Fair and Honest
It’s your job to call the shuttle’s position as “in” or “out” when it lands on your side of the court. So, be honest about where the shuttle falls. If a shuttle’s position by the line is difficult for you to determine as “in” or “out,” then it’s best to make the call that benefits your opponent. Additionally, if you hit an illegal shot, be sure to call it right away. - Serve with Your Opponent in Mind
Before serving, be sure to wait until your opponent is ready for your shot. Beyond that, you should announce the score before each serve. The server’s score is said first, and the receiver’s score is said second. - If it’s your opponent’s turn, hand the Shuttle Back Politely
- Shake Hands with your opponent after the match
… or nowadays lightly touching your racket heads. - Don’t distract other players
- Avoid walking near court lines when a match is ongoing
Walking within or close to the lines of a court that’s holding an ongoing match, is extremely frustrating for players as this forces them to stop playing until the people have passed by and are no longer within their playing area. If you’re thinking, “Why do they have to stop then?” The answer is simple. More experienced players move around the court a lot when playing, often taking up corner spaces as well. - Make sure everyone gets the opportunity to play
If you see participants sitting on the sideline benches, make sure to give them the opportunity to play after your match is done by leaving the court. Also, try to mix the teams as much as possible after each match, so everyone gets to play. For our adult drop-in group at Takhini Elementary, we also have a rotation system in place, that gets activated if we have 16+ players or if required. - Keep Calm, learn, and have fun
